  3. Offer a firm handshake. Shake hands when you arrive and when you leave.
  4. Sit up straight. Good posture shows you are alert and professional.
  5. Keep your hands calm. Rest them on your lap or the table. Do not fidget or play with your phone.

What to Wear

You do not need expensive clothes. You need clean, neat, simple clothes. The goal is to look professional and respectful.

  • For men: Clean pants (not jeans if possible), a button-down shirt or polo shirt, and clean closed shoes. A tie is not required for most jobs.
  • For women: Clean pants or a knee-length skirt with a blouse, or a simple dress. Clean closed shoes. Keep jewelry and makeup simple.
  • For everyone: Clothes should be ironed or wrinkle-free, with no holes, stains, or strong smells. Hair should be clean and neat. Nails should be clean.
  • Avoid: shorts, tank tops, flip-flops, hats, sunglasses on your head, and strong perfume or cologne.

Send a short thank-you email the same day as your interview, or the next morning. It shows good manners and reminds the employer of you.

Mock Interview 1 — Warehouse Worker

Practice reading this out loud with a friend. One person is the Interviewer, the other is You.

Interviewer: Good morning! Thanks for coming in. Can you tell me a little about yourself?

You: Good morning, thank you for having me. My name is [Your Name]. I moved to Syracuse two years ago. I have worked in warehouses before, doing picking, packing, and loading trucks. I am hardworking, reliable, and I learn fast.

Interviewer: What experience do you have with warehouse equipment?

You: I have used pallet jacks and hand trucks. I have not operated a forklift yet, but I am willing to get certified and learn. I always follow safety rules around equipment.

Interviewer: This job requires lifting up to 50 pounds and standing for 8 hours. Is that okay?

You: Yes, absolutely. I am used to physical work and I use proper lifting techniques. Standing for a full shift is no problem for me.

Interviewer: Tell me about a time you had to meet a tight deadline.

You: At my last warehouse job, we had a big order that had to ship the same day. My team and I stayed focused, divided the work, and packed everything on time. The supervisor thanked us for our teamwork.

Interviewer: How do you handle working the night shift?

You: I am flexible with shifts. I have worked nights before and I arrange my sleep schedule around it. As long as I know the schedule in advance, I am fine.

Interviewer: Why do you want to work here?

You: Your company has a good reputation and the location works well for me. I want a stable, long-term job where I can grow, and I believe this is the right place.

Interviewer: Do you have any questions for me?

You: Yes. What does a typical shift look like here? And is there training for new hires on your safety procedures?

Interviewer: Great questions. We will be in touch within a week. Thanks for coming.

You: Thank you very much for your time. I look forward to hearing from you. Have a great day!

Mock Interview 2 — Home Health Aide

Interviewer: Hello, nice to meet you. Please, tell me about yourself.

You: Hello, nice to meet you too. My name is [Your Name]. I am a certified home health aide with three years of experience caring for elderly clients. I am patient, caring, and very reliable. I speak French, Swahili, and English.

Interviewer: What kind of care have you provided?

You: I have helped clients with bathing, dressing, meals, and medication reminders. I also do light housekeeping and keep families updated on the client's condition. I treat every client with dignity and respect.

Interviewer: How do you handle a client who is upset or confused?

You: I stay calm and speak gently. I listen to them and try to understand what is wrong. If they are confused, I reassure them and redirect their attention to something comforting. Patience is the key.

Interviewer: What would you do in an emergency, like if a client falls?

You: First, I check if the client is conscious and breathing. I do not move them if I suspect a serious injury. I call 911 if needed, then I call my supervisor and the family. I stay with the client until help arrives.

Interviewer: Are you comfortable working with clients who have dementia?

You: Yes. I have cared for clients with memory problems. I keep routines consistent, speak clearly, and stay patient. I understand their behavior is part of the illness, not personal.

Interviewer: This job requires driving to clients' homes. Do you have reliable transportation?

You: Yes, I have a car and a valid driver's license. I am comfortable driving around the city.

Interviewer: Why should we hire you?

You: Because I truly care about my clients. I am dependable — families can count on me. I communicate well with nurses and families, and I take pride in doing excellent work every visit.

Interviewer: Any questions for me?

You: Yes. How many clients would I typically see per day? And what kind of support do aides get from the nursing team?

Interviewer: Good questions. We will contact you by Friday. Thank you.

You: Thank you for your time. I am very excited about this opportunity. Have a wonderful day!
