Your privacy, in plain language.
What this website does — and does not — do with your information, written to be read, not just filed.
Draft status: this policy will be finalized with the organization’s legal details before the live site launches. Everything still to be supplied is shown in a highlighted bracket — [like this] — so it is easy to find and replace: the legal name, contact email, mailing address, and effective date.
The short version
This site has no user accounts, takes no payments, and stores nothing on a server. Most forms simply open a ready-to-send email draft in your own mail app. Anything you post to a community board lives only in your own browser for that visit. We do not sell personal information, and this site runs no advertising or analytics trackers.
Forms draft an email — nothing more
When you use the service request, membership, join / volunteer, story, fundraiser, or contact forms, the site prepares an email draft addressed to the Umoja243 team and opens it in your own email app. The site itself never receives or stores what you typed — nothing is sent until you press Send in your mail app, and you can edit or delete the draft first. What the team receives is exactly the email you send, and they use it only to answer you and connect you with the help you asked for.
A safety note: ordinary email is not encrypted end-to-end. Please do not send identity documents, case files, bank details, or other sensitive paperwork through these forms — a volunteer will tell you a safer way to share them.
Community boards are in-memory only
Listings you add to the community board, job board, housing board, fundraiser board, announcements, and member profiles on this concept site appear only in your own browser, only during this visit. They are held in the page’s memory — never uploaded, never stored on a server — and they disappear when you close the tab. The Messages and Admin screens are design previews running on clearly labeled sample data, not real accounts or real conversations.
Newsletter signup
Signing up for the newsletter records your signup intent: on this concept site it confirms your subscription on screen and no email is sent or stored. On the live site, your email address and preferred language will be used only to send the newsletter you asked for, and every issue will include a one-click way to stop.
No accounts, no payment data
There are no user accounts on this site — no passwords, no profiles stored anywhere. The resume builder works entirely in your browser; nothing you type is uploaded, and downloading happens on your own device. This site collects and stores no payment data: the concept takes no payments at all. When live donations open, giving will happen on the payment provider’s own secure pages (such as Stripe, PayPal, or Donorbox), under that provider’s privacy policy — your card number will never touch this website.
Cookies — kept to a minimum
This site sets no cookies of its own and uses no analytics or advertising trackers. Your language choice and other in-page settings live only in the page’s memory for your visit. Some third-party services below may set their own cookies when you choose to use them — that is covered next.
Third-party services this site connects to
When you press play, join, or open one of these, your browser talks directly to that service, and that service’s own privacy policy applies:
- YouTube — the DR Congo Live page links to RTNC’s official YouTube channel for broadcasts.
- Jitsi Meet (meet.jit.si) — community video meetings. No account is needed; Jitsi can see the name you enter and the meeting traffic while you are in the room.
- Open-Meteo — the weather bar asks Open-Meteo for the forecast of the city you pick. No account, no key, and no location tracking — the request names a city, not you.
- Radio streams — the local FM player streams directly from each station’s own streaming provider when you press play.
- Google Fonts — the site’s typefaces load from Google Fonts, which receives a standard font request from your browser.
- Official websites we link to — USCIS, New York State, Congress, food banks, legal aid, and the other directories. We do not control those sites; check their own policies.
Children’s privacy
This site is written for adults and for parents and guardians. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children. Pages about schools, youth, and heritage classes are information for families — please do not post a child’s full name, photo, school, or other personal details on any board. If you believe a child’s information appears on this site, contact us at [Organization contact email] and we will remove it.
Sharing, and your choices
We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information. Information you email us is used to respond to you; if you ask us to connect you with a partner organization — a resettlement agency, legal aid, a food bank — we share only what is needed for that referral, and we tell you first. You may ask what information we hold about you (in practice, the emails you sent us), and ask us to correct or delete it, by writing to [Organization contact email].
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. Significant changes will also be announced on the site and in the newsletter.
