The rules of our shared house.
By using this website you agree to these terms. They are written plainly, on purpose — please read them.
Draft status: these terms will be finalized with the organization’s legal details before the live site launches. Everything still to be supplied is shown in a highlighted bracket — [like this] — so it is easy to find and replace: the legal name, contact email, mailing address, and effective date.
What this site is
This website is published by [Organization legal name] (“Umoja243”, “we”) to inform and connect the Congolese community of upstate New York. This is a design concept for umoja243.org: some features are previews, and the details below say which.
Acceptable use — boards, profiles, announcements & messaging
The community boards, member profiles, announcements, and messaging previews exist so neighbors can help neighbors. By posting, you agree:
- Be truthful and be kind. Post only offers, needs, and information you believe are accurate. No harassment, hate speech, threats, or discrimination.
- Protect privacy — yours and everyone’s. Never post another person’s phone number, address, documents, or photos without their clear permission, and never post identity or immigration documents at all.
- No scams, ever. No fake jobs, housing, loans, immigration “guarantees,” or requests for payment by wire transfer or gift card. Never charge anyone for help this community gives free.
- No impersonation. Do not pose as Umoja243 staff, a government agency, a lawyer, or another member.
- Keep it lawful and relevant. No spam, no advertising unrelated to the community, nothing illegal.
- Moderation. We may remove any post that breaks these rules, and the Report button on a post is how you flag one for review. On this concept site, boards are in-memory previews (see the Privacy Policy); on the live site, moderation decisions by the Umoja243 team are final.
You are responsible for what you post. By posting content, you give Umoja243 permission to display it on this site and to share community listings in the newsletter and at events.
Examples and placeholders — read the labels
Some listings, stories, events, episodes, and profiles on this site are clearly labeled examples or placeholders — including the leadership profiles, sample board listings marked “Example”, demo membership records, and the faith-community listings. They show the format the organization will use; they are not real offers, real people, or real records, and Umoja243 will replace them with verified content. Do not rely on an example as a real service, price, date, or person.
Not legal advice
Immigration, asylum, benefits, business-formation, and other guidance on this site is general information drawn from official sources (USCIS, New York State, the IRS, and others). It is not legal advice, Umoja243 is not a law firm, and reading this site does not create an attorney–client relationship. Rules and deadlines change and depend on your situation — for your own case, use the free legal aid directory or the NYS New Americans Hotline, 1-800-566-7636, and always confirm on the official source linked from each page.
Not financial advice
Content about FAFSA and student aid, remittances, taxes, fundraising, and forming an LLC or nonprofit is educational information, not financial, tax, or investment advice. Fees, rates, and eligibility change; compare current figures on the official sites and, for significant decisions, speak with a qualified professional. Free help exists — the site links to SBDC advisors, VITA tax help, and college financial-aid offices.
Donations and fundraisers — honesty rules
- This concept site takes no payments. No charge is ever made here.
- Fundraiser goals and progress shown on this site are as reported by the organizer. On the live site, organizers are verified by the Umoja243 team before money moves, and payouts go to the named beneficiary.
- Never send money to a personal account for a fundraiser you cannot verify — ask the team through the contact form first.
- Whether a gift is tax-deductible depends on the organization’s tax status, which [Organization legal name] will publish with its final details. Keep your receipt from the payment provider for any live donation.
Third-party links and services
This site links to official agencies and community organizations and connects to third-party services (YouTube, Jitsi Meet, Open-Meteo, radio streams). We work to keep links accurate — external links were re-verified on November 3, 2026 — but we do not control other organizations’ sites, and we are not responsible for their content, availability, or privacy practices.
Limitation of liability
This site and its content are provided “as is,” for general community information. To the fullest extent permitted by law, [Organization legal name], its officers, and its volunteers are not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of this site, reliance on its information, postings by community members, or third-party services. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under New York law. If something on this site affects your safety, housing, status, or money — verify it with the official source or a professional before acting.
Changes, governing law, and contact
We may update these terms; the version on this page, with its effective date, is the current one. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, and any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in New York. Questions about these terms: [Organization contact email] · [Organization mailing address].
